Other Benevolences

Bethesda takes up five special offerings each year:

One Great Hour of Sharing --  Easter

Presbyterian Homes of South Carolina -- Mother's Day

Dimes for Hunger -- October

Thornwell Home for Children -- Thanksgiving

Joy Gift (supports retired Presbyterian ministers and racial ethnic schools and colleges of PC(USA)) -- December

After each worship service when we have communion (the first Sundays in February, May, August, November, the first Sunday in Advent, and Maundy Thursday), worshippers have the opportunity to contribute to the minister's discretionary fund which is used to help people in need in our community.

In addition, our youth take up a "Souper Bowl" offering on Super Bowl Sunday each year and undertake other projects during the year.

Sacks of Love

Bethesda is responsible for filling approximately 30 bags a week for kids at Camden High School. Our donations of food & money make it possible for these children to have something to eat over the weekends when school isn't in session.

New Day on Mill Needs

New Day on Mill needs paper products (except paper plates), dishes, dish detergent, washer detergent, sponges & dish clothes, new or gently used dish towels, bath towels, twin & full-sized sheets, blankets, comforters, bedspreads, pillows & cases, new or used pans, skillets, silverware, cooking utensils, serving dishes, & small appliances.  A collection box is in Bethesda's office hallway.

Food for the Soul

In addition to Christian Community Ministries and the Community Medical Clinic, another opportunity to help “the least of these” in our community has come into being. Through the generous bequests of two local women who each wanted a portion of her estate used to alleviate hunger and help the homeless, a program called “FOOD FOR THE SOUL” has been started.

Reverend Frank Griffith, a retired Methodist minister, heads a committee that governs the non-profit project. Area churches have been asked to provide a pool of volunteers to help with food preparation, serving, and clean-up on the days that meals are served.  Presently that is Monday, Wednesday and Saturday with plans to add Tuesday and Thursday in the near future. Both men and women, 18 years and older are encouraged to be a part of the volunteer staff.

One of the women whose foresight initiated this program was Virginia Schlosburg—a long-time member of Bethesda. It would seem only fitting that we add to Virginia’s generosity by providing some of the many volunteers needed (8 per day) to ensure the success of this worthy project.

The new Soup Kitchen / Emergency Shelter opened April 19, 2011 behind the United Way Holsten Center on East DeKalb Street.  This is an important step forward for the Camden area in caring for those in need of a meal and / or temporary hospitality in emergency situations.  More information foodforthesoulkc.org

Please Contribute Your Time & Talents

As you know, our church runs on more than monetary donations from the congregation.  Through the efforts of each and every one of you, we are able to provide a variety of programs for the education of our membership and the worship of the Lord.

These programs can not run properly without the dedicated support of each one of you.  In order to provide every member a chance to participate in our activities, we have attached a copy of our annual Time and Talents request form.

Please prayerfully consider which activities you would like to participate in and complete the attached form.  Then drop the form off in the offering plate on Sunday or bring it by the office.

Our church will be richer a
s a result of your involvement in the various programs that we offer and you, too, will feel rewarded personally.
Thanks for your support !
